Wednesday Weekly House Remodel Update – 1/27/16

More laptop issues…

Excuses, excuses…..So I finally get my laptop back from the Apple store only to discover it is still broken!  Everytime I try to do anything with an image, i.e. open PhotoShop or iPhotos the screen goes completely blue and crashes.  UGH!   I spent half the day yesterday trying to figure it out.  Rebooting, upgrading, etc.  Nothing was working.  I finally called to make an appointment with the Geniuses at Apple.  Of course they don’t have any appointments right away and the Apple store closest to my house is booked 2 weeks out. The best I could do was an appointment a week away at a store that is a little farther away.  Anyway, I will use my husband’s computer until mine is (hopefully) fixed.  And that is my excuse for not getting this update out yesterday. 😉

Okay, onto House stuff….

Man oh man did this week fly by.  I feel like I was just writing my last Weekly Update like, 2 minutes ago.  I also feel like not much has been done this week.  The AC guys are still working away in there.  They are aiming to be done and ready for inspection by Friday.  Fingers crossed!  Once that is done, they can finally begin putting the drywall up!  I. Can’t. Wait!

Roof…

The shingles were delivered Tuesday so they could begin to shingle the roof Wednesday.  Unfortunately it rained Wednesday and it is raining again today. Of course its raining.  Grrrr!  Frustrating! But, tomorrow (Friday) is supposed to be nice.  We hope they begin.

Driveway Pavers…

Here are the pavers we choose for our driveway.  The colors are very neutral which means they will match pretty much everything.  The driveway will be the last thing we do, or close to the last thing.

Pool…

Our pool is supposed to get started in 2 weeks (finally!!!). They haven’t been able to begin yet due to various equipment, etc. in the backyard.  Now that everything is cleared out they can begin to dig it out. However,  before they can begin we need the lanai roof put on since the lanai cage will be attached to it. Here is a picture of the lanai and the drawing of how the lanai roof will look.  It is hard to tell, but this area is huge!  Please disregard the yucky looking port-a-potty in the background.  That’ll be gone, eventually. We will have indoor plumbing.  🙂  Anyway, the roof is supposed to get started next week.

Stress…

This whole house remodel project is very stressful.  Delays, making the right choices, waiting, worrying, wondering, money….it is hard.  Don’t get me wrong, I feel very lucky that we are able to do this, it is just a very frustrating process.  And now since we sold our house, the pressure is on to get it done so we can move in.  It seems so close yet so far away and we just need to hang in there for a few more months.  I can’t wait to get to the fun stuff, like decorating.

Wednesday Weekly House Remodel Update – 1/20/16, Flooring and Stucco

Stucco Done…

The stucco on our house is complete and the new garage door is installed and it looks soooooo good.  It is so nice to see the entire house all one color again and not half yellow, half gray, with parts of an ugly old outdated rock wall. Don’t ya think?

Flooring…

We went back to Abbey Flooring today to try to make some decisions.  We focused on hard wood and carpet for today. We are getting closer to needing this stuff so we need to get it ordered. You may recall I wrote about flooring several times.  You can look back here and here to see more details but here is a short recap.  The first floor that my husband and I agreed on was this one below. It is beautiful but a little darker then I was willing to go.

We also looked at this floor at Home Depot.

I wanted something a little lighter and more ‘beachy/coastal’ looking.  Today, we found this floor and I love it, and it is in stock. It is a Natural Hickory.

These 2 pictures above are actually the same floor sample, just taken in different lighting.  The first image was taken outside in the sunlight.  The second image was taken inside the store today, which was quite bright actually.  It looks so different!  Either way, I really like it. We also chose a nice carpet for the bedroom.  Here they are together, picture taken in the sunlight.

I also started looking at tiles for the bathrooms.  I got a little overwhelmed with all the choices (as I usually do).  I started with the guest bathroom which will have a shower only, no tub, which means it’ll need some tiling.  I like the tile in the below left photo as the bathroom floor and shower walls, with the stone as the shower floor and accent. Similar to these pictures below.  You like?

That is about as far as I got today for tile choices.  So many decisions and of course I kept picking out tiles that I loved that were crazy expensive!  HA!

Other stuff…

Inspections are happening this week. Hopefully all goes well with those so we can move on.  Then shingling will be installed in the next few weeks, then the pool guys can get started.

We will be doing the driveway with pavers toward the end of the remodel.   My husband met with a friend of ours from a local company called European Pavers to get a quote for the job.  The driveway is really a mess.  It is cracked in several places and just looks bad.  Pavers will look so much better!  We need to get our butts to the showroom and pick out pavers ASAP so they can be ordered and ready for when we need them.

That is about all for now.  Thanks for reading!

Wednesday Weekly House Remodel Update – 1/13/16

Missed any of my past updates?  No worries, you can see them all here.

What’s Happening…

Lots of activity happening at the House house this week.  They began to put the stucco on the outside of the house!  It is looking so good.  I am kind of digging the grayish color (or maybe I am just happy to see the yellow go). It actually dried a little lighter than this and looks good. We will need to paint over this though, obviously.

So, to get ready to paint the outside of the house I began looking online at different color schemes. I am liking the look of a gray house or some form of beige, with white trim and either a navy blue or red door. Sort of a classic New England beach cottage look.   Like these, or the one at the top of this page.   Do you think that would work here in Florida? I don’t see why not.

Air Conditioner…

The AC units are getting installed this week.  Finally.  And just in time for the very cool weather we are having.  Today it only reached maybe 65 degrees, tops!  Poor, poor us having to endure such extreme cold.  HA!  Just teasing.  I know many of you out there live in WAY colder places (like we did) and are probably ready to kill me right now.  But seriously when you live here, and are used to it being so warm all the time, 65 degrees feels DAMN COLD!  It just does.  People break out their winter gear here when it gets this cold. Kinda like this….

Anyway.  AC is a must here in Florida.  We run our’s almost all year round.  We will have 2 zones.  1 for each level of the house.

Doors…

We had to pick out interior doors this week.  Boring stuff, right? And you’d think it would be simple.  Nope.  There are A LOT of different styles to choose from.  This is one of those items that I never thought twice about.  A door is a door is a door until you have to pick them out for your own house.  I didn’t want anything to fancy or to simple so I selected these…the handles in chrome and the doors in white.

Kind of plain and simple and boring, but classic at the same time.  We have doors like these below in our current house.  You might have them too.  They are very common so I wanted to pick something different.

Laptop…

Remember a few weeks ago when I was complaining about my broken laptop? Well, it is still not fixed!  Can you believe it?  The good news is that I took it to the Apple store over the weekend and everything is going to be fixed for FREE.  Originally I was quoted $550 from the iHospital to fix it, so Wahooo for that!  I should be getting it back any day now.  I really miss the ole girl.

That is all for this week.  Hope to have more interior photos next week. Thanks for reading!

Wednesday Weekly House Remodel Update – 1/6/16 – Selling Houses, Inspections and Countertops

Happy New Year….

Hi!  What a year 2015 was.  Onto 2016 and finishing this project!

Guess what?  We sold our house!  Wahoo!  We are very happy.  What a relief.  We got the offer before New Years Eve and accepted it without countering.  It was a great offer so we took it! We had the home inspection this week and are waiting for feedback on that.  The buyers want to close at the end of March which works fine with us.  Now the pressure is really on to get the House house DONE once and for all.

House Remodel Updates…

Speaking of the house.  Things are moving along.  Electrical is almost finished. Now we are waiting for inspections on plumbing, electrical and roofing before we can move forward with drywall and shingles and installing the new AC system.  These inspections are supposed to happen this week.  Hopefully. They are also supposed to be doing the stucco on the addition this week, but so far we have not seen that happen.

We went over to the house yesterday to check things out.  It seems like we are still so far away from moving in there.  Check out these photos.

Still a long way to go but getting there little by little.

Checking out countertops…

We finally went to look at countertops yesterday.  It was very overwhelming.  There were rows upon rows upon rows of all kinds of counters…..granite, quartz, quartzite, recycled glass, etc.  Thousands of different styles.  Those of you who have ever had to go though this know how overwhelming it can be.  Am I right??? I don’t want to pick something I later dislike or get sick of. This is a very big investment and something I will use and see every single day.  I don’t want to make a mistake.

Counters galore
Just a small sample of counters

I think we will be going with quartz since it is the most durable, doesn’t stain and is really low maintenance.  My husband and I each picked out three styles (from the wall of samples) then we eliminated two we both agreed were not great to make it four.  We were then able to go into the warehouse where this huge machine pulled out a slab of each so we could get a better look. Here is what we picked.  Top row – Milky Way (left) and Dolce Vita (right), bottom row –  Rock Salt (left) and Stonewashed (right).

Quartz styles we choose
Quartz styles we liked

And here is a closer look at three of them.  We weren’t able to get a good look, or a better photo of the one on the top right (Dolce Vita).  It was located outside of the warehouse and the machine was not available to pull it out for us, and at this point, the husband was ‘done’ looking, if you know what I mean. We’d been there a while!

We were able to bring home samples of each, except Dolce Vita.  Once we got home we realized both the Rock Salt and Stonewashed looked almost exactly like the Corian countertops we have in our current house! Although we like them, it is time for a change.  So that leaves us with the top 2.  Milky Way looks more granite-like to me and the other one looks almost marble-like.  I like them both, and of course both are on the pricier end of the spectrum. We will have to consider this when making our final selection since our kitchen island is HUGE, and will require a huge piece of material.  Our contractor told us to select several styles and send them to his fabricator, then we can take a look at what is in the fabricators yard and get good prices on his stock material.  Hopefully we will find something similar to the ones we chose.

Which is your favorite?  Or, do you have another style you love that you can recommend? I am not really ‘sold’ on any of these….yet.

We also checked out these cool recycled glass counters.  Aren’t they pretty?  I think they’d be great for the kids bathroom. We’ll see.  You are able to buy half slabs of this product which might be a a good solution for the kids bath and maybe the guest bath too?  We’ll have to figure that out with our contractor.

Any advice for me on materials?  I have had granite before and currently have Corian (which I actually like a lot, surprisingly).  Leave me a comment.

Tomorrow we have an appointment to order doors!  Fun stuff.  Will update you on that next week.
